Clear Lines for Busy Lots

Line striping turns a sheet of asphalt into an organized lot. Stall lines, accessible spaces, arrows, stop bars, crosswalks and fire lanes tell drivers where to go and where not to park. In New Orleans, strong sun fades paint and constant rain washes grime over it, so lines in drive lanes and entrances wear out quickly. When lines fade, drivers park unevenly and a lot loses spaces.

Restriping and new layouts

Restriping repaints the existing layout. A new layout redraws the lot, usually after an overlay, a change in tenants or a plan to fit more spaces. HomeGuide notes new layouts cost 20 to 50 percent more because the lot is measured and marked from scratch.

Accessible parking

The 2010 ADA Standards set the number of accessible spaces a lot needs, their size, the access aisle beside them, how many must be van-accessible and where they go relative to the entrance. When a lot is restriped, the work is expected to meet current standards. We lay out accessible spaces and aisles to those dimensions and point out signs or slopes that may need attention.

What we paint

  • Standard and compact stalls
  • Accessible stalls, aisles and symbols
  • Arrows, stop bars and crosswalks
  • Fire lanes and loading zones
  • Curb painting and stenciled words or numbers

Weather and scheduling

Paint needs a dry surface. We schedule striping on dry days, often early mornings, and work section by section so the lot stays open. After sealcoating, striping follows once the sealer has dried.

Layout basics

Standard stalls are commonly about 9 by 18 feet, with aisle widths set by the parking angle. We measure and chalk the layout before painting so it fits the lot and keeps traffic flowing.

Curb and fire lane paint

Fire lanes, loading zones and painted curbs tell drivers where not to stop. Faded red or yellow curbs get ignored. We repaint them along with the stall lines so the whole lot reads clearly.

Visibility at night and in rain

New Orleans lots see a lot of night traffic and frequent rain, when faded lines are hardest to see. Bright, fresh paint keeps drivers in their lanes and spaces.

Line Striping Questions

How often should we restripe?

When lines are hard to see, and every time the lot is sealcoated. Heavy-traffic lanes wear first.

Can a new layout add spaces?

Sometimes, within the limits of stall and aisle sizes and the accessible spaces the lot requires.

Will we have to close?

No. We stripe in sections and at off-hours.

Do you lay out accessible spaces?

Yes, to the 2010 ADA Standards, and we point out signs or slopes that may need a closer look.
