Rebuilding Arabi's Driveways

Arabi is a census-designated place in St. Bernard Parish on the east bank of the Mississippi, right next to New Orleans, at about 3 feet of elevation. It had 10,248 residents in 1980. Katrina's surge in 2005 flooded all of Arabi, more than 20 feet deep in some areas, and the population fell to 3,635 by 2010 before recovering to 4,533 in 2020.
Two tornadoes in one year
In 2022 Arabi was hit twice: an EF3 tornado on March 22 that killed one person and caused widespread damage, and an EF2 on December 14. Some driveways damaged by debris and heavy equipment during cleanup are still waiting for proper repair.
Old town, new work
Arabi began as Stockyard Landing, named for its stockyards and slaughterhouses, and was transferred to St. Bernard Parish in 1875. A historic district was declared in the 1970s. Older homes, rebuilt homes and new construction now sit side by side, with driveways of every age.
