Paving in the River Parishes
Asphalt paving in LaPlace has been busy since August 29, 2021, when Hurricane Ida badly damaged the community. LaPlace is a census-designated place in St. John the Baptist Parish, on the east bank of the Mississippi about 25 miles west of New Orleans, at about 10 feet of elevation, with 28,841 residents in 2020.
After Ida
Roof repairs, debris removal and heavy equipment took a toll on driveways. Many that were sound before the storm now have broken edges, sunken spots and cracks from trucks and dumpsters. Some can be repaired; others need a rebuild.
Highways
Interstate 55 ends in LaPlace where it joins I-10, and US 51 ends at US 61 (Airline Highway). That junction makes LaPlace a logistics and commuter hub, and commercial lots near the interchanges see heavy truck traffic.
History
German immigrants settled the area in the early 1700s as part of the German Coast. In 1879 Basile LaPlace established a plantation, and the railroad built through his land in 1883 gave the depot, and then the town, his name. LaPlace calls itself the Andouille Capital of the World and has held an Andouille Festival every October since 1972.
Low ground near the spillway
The 1850 Bonnet Carre Crevasse once flooded this stretch of the river. Low ground and slow drainage are common, and bases need to be firm.
Permits
LaPlace is unincorporated, so St. John the Baptist Parish rules apply on parish roads and Louisiana DOTD on state and US highways.
Costs
HomeGuide lists major driveway repairs at about $600 to $3,000 and full new driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot nationally. Many post-Ida driveways need repairs rather than full replacement.
