Rebuilding Driveways in a Planned Community

Asphalt paving in Terrytown is mostly driveway replacement in one of the West Bank's best-known planned communities. Developer Paul Kapelow opened Terrytown to the public on March 6, 1960, naming it for his daughter Terry; the main east-west street, Carol Sue Avenue, is named for his second daughter. The original homes were promoted for a construction idea of the day: all the plumbing in one wall.

Below sea level

Terrytown's official elevation is about 3 feet below sea level. Low ground means soft soil and slow drainage, and driveways built in the 1960s on thin bases have often sunk, cracked and been patched for years.

A lot of driveways the same age

Terrytown grew from 13,832 residents in 1970 to 23,548 in 1980 and had 25,278 in 2020. When a neighborhood fills in that quickly, the driveways age together. We see many that need full replacement with a deeper base.

Roads and shopping

Belle Chasse Highway (LA 23) forms the southwest border, Behrman Highway (LA 428) runs through the east side, and the Oakwood Center mall draws regional traffic. Commercial lots in the area need regular repairs, sealing and striping.

Parish permits

Terrytown is unincorporated, so Jefferson Parish handles driveway aprons on parish right-of-way. On state highways such as LA 23, Louisiana DOTD issues the permit.

Costs

Angi lists removal and replacement at about $8 to $15 per square foot. Because Terrytown driveways are mostly similar sizes on similar lots, many fall in a similar range, but soft ground found once the old surface is out can change it; we show you before adding anything.

Terrytown Questions

Why do so many Terrytown driveways sink?

Low, soft ground and thin original bases. A rebuild with more compacted stone is the lasting fix.

Who issues permits?

Jefferson Parish for parish streets; Louisiana DOTD on state highways like LA 23.

Do you work near Oakwood Center?

Yes, including commercial lots.

How long will a rebuilt driveway last?

Cost guides give asphalt about 15 to 30 years. A deeper base and regular sealing push toward the long end.
