Paving at the Northshore Crossroads

Asphalt paving in Slidell serves the largest city in eastern St. Tammany Parish, with 28,781 residents in 2020. Slidell was founded in 1882 and 1883 during construction of the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad and chartered in 1888. It grew slowly until the 1960s, when NASA facilities nearby nearly tripled the population in about a decade, from 6,356 in 1960 to 16,101 in 1970, and it reached 26,718 by 1980.

Highways and commercial lots

Slidell sits at the southwest corner of the junction of Interstates 10, 12 and 59 and US 11. That crossroads brings a lot of retail, restaurants and service businesses, and their lots take heavy traffic. We repair, resurface, seal and stripe those lots and pave new ones.

Storm surge history

During Katrina, parts of the city about 2 miles inland saw storm surge above 10 feet, and unincorporated areas to the south and east saw 13 to 16 feet. Many driveways and lots were rebuilt afterward, and those are now reaching the age for resurfacing and sealing.

Higher than the south shore

At about 13 feet of elevation, Slidell is higher than most of the south shore, but low areas near bayous and the lake still drain slowly. We check each site for soft ground and standing water.

Longer drives

Northshore lots tend to be larger, with longer driveways and more trees. Pine and oak roots, longer edges and turnarounds all factor into the plan.

Permits

Inside Slidell city limits, we confirm the city's requirements; in unincorporated areas, St. Tammany Parish's.
