Driveways in Old Little Farms

Asphalt paving in River Ridge is residential work on some of the larger lots in East Jefferson. River Ridge is an unincorporated census-designated place in Jefferson Parish along about 3 miles of Jefferson Highway (LA 48), between Harahan and Kenner, with 13,591 residents in 2020. After World War II, G.I. Bill financing spurred development from the early 1950s, and by 1965 the area, then known as Little Farms, was largely built out. It was officially renamed River Ridge in 1974.

Bigger lots, longer drives

The Little Farms name hints at the lot sizes. Many homes here sit on wider, deeper lots than in neighboring areas, with longer driveways, circular drives and parking pads. Those need full bases throughout, supported edges and careful drainage.

River history

Sauve's Crevasse, a levee failure in 1849 at the Sauve Providence plantation, flooded much of the land east of here, including parts of New Orleans. The river is still the defining feature, and ground near the levee is generally firmer than the lower land toward the lake.

Mature trees

Postwar neighborhoods have had seventy years to grow big trees. Roots under driveways cause ridges and cracks. We plan around them where we can.

Permits

River Ridge is unincorporated, so Jefferson Parish handles aprons on parish right-of-way through its Department of Engineering.

Costs

Longer and circular drives add square footage; HomeGuide puts a 1,000-square-foot driveway at about $5,000 to $12,000 nationally and notes curves add 15 to 30 percent.
